Progress in the Application of Soil Amendments in the Remediation of Heavy Metals in Soil

Jinyan Qu, Zhanqiang Li, Yaozhong Liu, Haixia Zhang

Abstract

As industrialization accelerates and human activities intensify, soil contamination by heavy metals has emerged as one of the significant environmental challenges globally. To mitigate the toxicity and bioavailability of heavy metals and ensure the health and sustainable
development of soil ecosystems, employing soil amendments for remediation is a prevalent and effective strategy. However, different types of
soil amendments possess distinct characteristics and scopes of application, with varying advantages and disadvantages. This review explores
the sources and characteristics of heavy metal pollution in soils and summarizes the advancements in research on soil heavy metal remediation
using various soil amendments: natural soil amendments, composite amendments combined with other materials, and modified soil amendments. Additionally, it discusses the associated remediation technologies and principles and envisions the future prospects of soil amendments
as a technique for remediating soil heavy metal contamination.
