Mount St. Helens Volcanic Hazard Risk Assessment and Emergency Response Strategy Study

Chenxuan Wu

Abstract

Mount St. Helens, a stratovolcano in Washingtons Cascade Mountains, sits above the Cascadia subduction zone and is known for
its 1980 eruption. It continues to be active and threatens nearby communities. This paper looks at the geological and tectonic factors behind
its activity, eruption risks, and the vulnerabilities of surrounding areas. It proposes a new disaster preparedness framework, drawing on international best practices, advocating for advanced monitoring, improved evacuation plans, and community engagement. The study integrates
emerging technologies like AI and GIS with climate change considerations to improve volcanic hazard management. The goal is to enhance
resilience and prepare communities for future risks from Mount St. Helens and similar volcanic threats.
