Research on the Impact of Environmental Performance Assessment on Green Innovation of Listed Enterprises

Kejia Li

Abstract

Environmental performance assessment is a critical policy instrument for environmental governance that shapes corporate green
innovation behavior. Using the 2019 revision of the Measures for the Assessment of Business Performance of Persons in Charge of Central
Enterprises by China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) as a quasi-natural experiment, this study
employs the difference-in-differences (DID) method to examine how environmental performance assessment affects green innovation in listed
enterprises. The findings reveal that: (1) environmental performance assessment significantly promotes corporate green innovation; (2) digital
transformation plays a positive moderating role, strengthening the positive effect of environmental assessment on green patent output; (3)
after policy implementation, central enterprises generate more green patents through breakthrough and collaborative innovation rather than
incremental and independent innovation.
