A Study of Synonyms of Petroleum Science and Technology Terms based on COCA Corpus -- Extract and Refine as Examples

Abstract


Petroleum science and technology terms is both the emphasis and difficulty in petroleum English translation. This paper takes a
set of English synonyms, extract and refine, commonly found in petroleum science and technology texts, as an example, and conducts a
comparative analysis based on the COCA corpus from the perspectives of lexical meaning, collocation, word frequency distribution and diachronic characteristics. The aim is to help translators related to petrochemical field to translate petroleum science and technology terms more
professionally and accurately when facing different contexts.
