The Relationships Between Information Behavior and Subjective Well-Being: A National Survey in Mainland China

Abstract


Using data from the latest Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) and structural equation modeling, this study clarifies the relationship among information behaviors, social mentality, individual optimism, social interactions, and national subjective well-being (SWB). It is
found that: (1) traditional media use, new media use, perceived social trust, and perceived social fairness can positively contribute to SWB,
(2) traditional media use is positively related to perceived social trust and perceived social fairness while new media use is negatively related
to both, and (3) individual optimism and social interactions can moderate the relationship between new media use and SWB. Combining the
theories and perspectives of health communication, this paper discusses the research findings with suggestions for improving SWB from the
angles of the government, academia, and individual users.
