On Rhetorical Devices Translation Based on Skopos Theory: A Comparative Analysis of the Two Chinese Translations of Marrakech by George Orwell

Abstract

This thesis compares two Chinese translations of Marrakech by Liu Qinqiu and Zhao Yong, and Yao Lan, focusing on whether they
align with the purposes of rhetorical devices. It selects the most frequent rhetorical devices in Marrakech and analyzes their translations under
the Skopos Theory. Current Chinese studies on Marrakech’s rhetorical devices often focus on appreciation or specific devices, with limited
comparative analysis between translations, especially from a Skopos Theory perspective. The Skopos Theory highlights the translation’s purpose and target readers’ response. The thesis aims to determine if adhering to this theory aids in translating stylistic devices. Through detailed
analysis, it finds that the Skopos, coherence, and fidelity principles guide the translation of rhetorical devices in Marrakech.
