A Study of Translating Exhibition Texts of the China Grain Museum from the Perspective of Communicative Translation Theory

Abstract


The English exhibition texts in museums serve as a vital bridge for international communication, playing a key role in presenting
valuable artifacts, explaining their rich historical and cultural contexts, and promoting cultural exchange between China and the world. This
paper, grounded in Peter Newmarks translation theory, focuses on the basic exhibition texts from the China Grain Museum as a case study. It
explores translation strategies from the perspective of communicative translation theory. The study emphasizes the importance of streamlining
redundant information, accurately translating proper nouns, moderately adapting ornate language, and tackling the challenges of translating
culturally specific terms related to grain. Through a detailed analysis of these key elements, the paper examines how translators can skillfully
employ various strategies such as omission, addition, and integration to enhance the overall quality of the English exhibition texts. Ultimately,
this aims to facilitate more effective international dissemination and exchange of Chinese culture.
