Reduction of Carbon Emissions in Wastewater Treatment Plants: An Overview of Innovative Technologies
Abstract
treatment plants (WWTPs). Key strategies include process optimization, low-carbon technologies, and renewable energy integration. Technologies such as High-Rate Activated Sludge (HRAS), anaerobic digestion, and combined heat and power (CHP) are crucial for carbon reduction
and energy self-sufficiency. The shift towards a circular economy, viewing wastewater as a resource, offers further opportunities for reducing
environmental impacts. Future research should focus on scaling these technologies and developing policies for broader adoption.
