Study on the Characteristics of Organic Matter in Effluents from Sulfur-Based Autotrophic and Heterotrophic Denitrification Biofilters and Fouling of Ultrafiltration Membranes
Abstract
Hydrophobic components dominated, with HOA highest in sulfur-based effluent (30.27%) and HON in heterotrophic effluent (27.59%). Most
DOM had MW <5 kDa, with MW <1 kDa accounting for 54.89%, 69.5%, and 56.2% in heterotrophic, sulfur-based, and secondary effluents.
Sulfur-based effluent showed smaller MWs and lower humic acid content (HOB, HIA). UF flux was 55% higher than heterotrophic and 22%
higher than secondary effluent due to lower HON levels, smaller MWs, and reduced humic acid, minimizing fouling.
