From Rhetorical Strategies to Critical Judgment: Language Manipulation and Cognitive Reflection in the Context of Generative AI

Qingling Li

Abstract

Generative AI technologies, such as ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs), have revolutionized the way we interact
with and understand language. These systems, designed to generate human-like text, employ complex rhetorical strategies that often blur the
lines between persuasion and manipulation. This paper explores the intersection of rhetoric, critical judgment, and cognitive reflection in the
context of generative AI. By analyzing the rhetorical frameworks employed by AI systems and their impact on human cognition, this study
aims to provide a theoretical foundation for understanding how AI reshapes language dynamics in digital communication. Through detailed
examples of AI applications in diverse contexts such as education, advertising, and social media, the findings highlight the importance of fostering critical thinking skills to navigate AI-generated content effectively.
