The Essential Role of Paper Charts in Route Design Evaluation Amidst the ECDIS Era
Abstract
Admiralty charts. Using a multi-method approach, it analyzes ECDIS advantages and paper charts roles in backups, skill training, and complex navigation. Findings show paper charts are still vital for safety, skill inheritance, and education quality. The paper suggests strategies for
integrating ECDIS and paper charts and calls for updated exams, practical training, emergency readiness, ongoing education, and interdisciplinary studies to develop navigators adept in both traditional and modern tech.
