The Types of Defects and Damage Mechanisms in Wind Turbine Composites Materials

Abstract


Blades are critical structural components of utility-scale wind turbines. Carbon fibre reinforced composites, as a superior performance material with light weight and high strength, have been widely used in aerospace, wind power generation and automotive manufacturing.
However, composite structures may develop different defects during the manufacturing process and use. In the case of cyclic stresses and
external impacts, this may even lead to severe damage, such as delamination and fibre breakage. The main points of this report are as follows:
The types of defects and damage mechanisms in composite materials are summarised, including defects that can occur during production and
processing as well as those that can occur during use. Types of defects include voids, resin-rich areas, fibre curl misalignment and erosion,
among others. Damage mechanisms include fibre breakage and delamination.
