The Presentation and Evolution of China's National Image in Overseas Textbooks: A Review Based on Relevant Literature

Mingwei Li, Jianan Yin*

Abstract

This paper reviews relevant literature on the presentation and evolution of China's national image in overseas textbooks, analyzing
its characteristics, evolutionary logic, and underlying motivations across different countries. This study finds that overseas textbooks' portrayal
of China, shaped by historical narratives, national interests, and ideology, is multifaceted and complex, combining affirmation of China's historical status and contemporary rise with prevalent prejudices. Future research should focus on textbooks of Belt and Road countries, Sinoforeign narrative comparisons on historical events, and the influence mechanism on adolescents' cognition to promote a more objective international understanding of China.
