The Mediating Effect of Sleep among Preschool Children on the Relationship between Emotional and Behavioral Problems and Child-Care Environments

Fangfang Miao, Chunyan Jin*

Abstract

This study examines the mediating role of sleep habits in the relationship between emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs) and
child-care environments among preschool children. A random cluster sampling method was used to select 1, 083 valid participants aged 3 to 6
years from five kindergartens in Leshan City, Sichuan Province, China. The analysis revealed that "Human stimulation" and "Social stimulation" fully mediated the impact of child-care environments on SDQ scores through sleep habits (ab: -0.005, p < 0.001; ab: -0.004, p < 0.001).
Furthermore, "Avoidance of restriction" not only significantly enhanced prosocial behavior (c: -0.041, p < 0.001) but also showed a partial
mediating effect (ab: -0.008, p < 0.001). These findings highlight the critical role of a positive childcare environment in addressing both childcare environments and sleep habits to mitigate the risk of EBPs.
