Genre Analysis of English Research Article Abstracts from Nature and Science

Yu Bian

Abstract

Abstract is the concentration and essence of academic papers. It is particularly important for scholars who want to publish on top
journals to write English abstract correctly. In this research, 15 abstracts of research papers are selected respectively from two authoritative international journals, nature and science, and a total of 30 self-built small corpora is thus built. This paper makes a comparative analysis of the
abstract genres. According to Swales' CARS model, the results show that in both journals, M3S5, M3S1 and M2S1B are obligatory, M2S1A
and M3S6 are optional, and M1, M2S2, M3S2, M3S3 and M3S7 are omitted ones. The purpose of this paper is to study the methods and skills
used by top scholars in paper writing through analyzing the characteristics of abstract steps in top journals, so as to provide inspiration and
guidance for other scholars in writing, and to improve their writing quality and academic status.
