Morphological Study of Female Denonvilliers Fascia
Abstract
female cadaver specimens and the comparison with surgical videos of female patients with rectal cancer. Methods: Dissection studies were
performed on 5 female cadaver specimens and compared with surgical videos of female rectal cancer patients to explore the existence, structure and course of female Denonvilliers fascia. The Denonvilliers fascia was used for histological observation with HE staining and Masson
staining. Results: Denonvilliers fascia was found in all 5 cadaver specimens. It is a thin membranous structure located between the rectal
mesentery and the posterior vaginal wall. It starts cranially at the lowest part of the peritoneal reflection, ends caudally at the perineal body,
and gradually attaches to the parietal pelvic fascia laterally. Through HE staining and Masson staining, female Denonvilliers fascia is mainly
composed of collagen fibers and elastic fibers. In addition, nerves and blood vessels as well as adipose tissues can also be seen. Through
the surgical videos of female rectal cancer patients, it can also be found that when approaching from below the lowest part of the peritoneal reflection, the posterior vaginal wall is covered with a smooth thin membranous structure, which is the female Denonvilliers fascia.
Conclusion: Female Denonvilliers fascia exists, which is a thin membranous structure located between the rectal mesentery and the posterior
vaginal wall. It starts cranially at the lowest part of the peritoneal reflection, ends caudally at the perineal body, and gradually attaches to the
parietal pelvic fascia laterally.
