A Review of the Research on Dachengqi Decoction in the Treatment of Gastrointestinal Dysfunction

Xianle Yang, Peng Xia

Abstract

Dachengqi Decoction, derived from Shanghan Lun (Treatise on Febrile Diseases) by Zhang Zhongjing, the "Sage of Medicine", is
well-known for its potent effect in purging heat and relieving stagnation. Through continuous exploration and analysis by researchers, it has
been concluded that the pharmacodynamic basis of Dachengqi Decoction's efficacy lies in the synergistic effect of its multiple medicinal ingredients. The formula consists of four Chinese medicinal materials: Rheum palmatum, Magnolia officinalis, Citrus aurantium, and Mirabilite
(Glauber's salt). Among them, Rheum palmatum serves as the sovereign medicine, exerting effects of clearing heat and purging fire, detoxifying, and cooling blood. The volatile oils and other components in Magnolia officinalis can regulate qi flow to relieve stagnation and eliminate
accumulation and fullness; when combined with Citrus aurantium, it enhances the effect of breaking qi stagnation and relieving stuffiness. Mirabilite functions to soften hard masses and moisten dryness. When these Chinese medicinal materials are used together, they exert maximum
efficacy, thereby effectively treating gastrointestinal diseases. This paper deeply explores the chemical composition, mechanism of action, and
clinical application of Dachengqi Decoction in the treatment of gastrointestinal dysfunction.
