Progress in Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment Principles and Pharmacological Research on Atherosclerosis
Abstract
and increased risks of stroke and myocardial infarction. Although Western drugs such as statins reduce LDL and slow disease progression,
their effectiveness in complex AS and associated side effects remain limiting. In contrast, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) applies a holistic, syndrome-based approach with multi-target advantages. This review summarises TCM perspectives on AS pathogenesis and treatment,
focusing on tonifying the kidney, boosting qi, resolving phlegm, and activating blood to improve symptoms and prognosis. TCM interventions
regulate immunity, oxidative stress, lipid metabolism, and endothelial function, and many formulas show beneficial pharmacological effects.
Further studies are needed to confirm their mechanisms and clinical efficacy.
