Muscle and Bone Ultrasound Combined with Acoustic Pulse Radiation Force Elastography to Evaluate the Clinical Efficacy of Xiaotong Powder in Treating Early and Middle Stage Knee Osteoarthritis
Abstract
technology to see the effects of Xiaotong powder external application on early to mid-stage knee osteoarthritis. Eighty patients with early
or middle knee osteoarthritis who visited the hospital during January to October 2025 were included in the study. A total of 80 patients were
randomly divided into experimental group (40 patients receiving external application of Xiaotong powder) and control group (40 patients receiving oral acetaminophen tablets). Both groups were examined before treatment and three months post-treatment for marrow and bone ultrasound to measure suprapatellar bursa effusion depth and synovial thickness. At the same time, the implementation of acoustic pulse radiation
force elastography technology took place in order to obtain the shear wave velocity (SWV) values of the vastus lateralis muscle. The clinical
efficacy was assessed by WOMAC and the correlation of ultrasound parameters and WOMAC were analysed. Result: Post-treatment the
suprapatellar bursa effusion depth, synovial thickness and vastus lateralis SWV values were significantly improved in the experimental group
compared to the control group and was statistically significant (P<0.001). The improvements in WOMAC score in the experimental group
correlated positively with improvements of the above three ultrasound parameters (P<0.001). Conclusion: Result of the combination of muscle
and bone ultrasound and acoustic pulse radiation force elastography provides an objective and quantified imaging basis for Xiaotong powder's efficacy in early to mid-stage knee osteoarthritis patients, which considers parameters of joint structure and muscle mechanical property.
