Clinical Efficacy of Banxia Baizhu Tianma Decoction as an Adjuvant Treatment for Carotid Artery Atherosclerosis with Wind-Phlegm Obstructing the Meridians

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the clinical efficacy of Banxia Baizhu Tianma Decoction as an adjuvant treatment for carotid artery atherosclerosis (CAS) with wind-phlegm obstructing the meridians. Methods: Fifty patients with CAS presenting as the "Wind-Phlegm Obstructing
the Meridians" pattern, admitted to our hospital between January 2020 and January 2025, were selected and randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, each comprising 25 patients. The control group received conventional Western medical treatment, while
the observation group received the same treatment as the control group supplemented with Banxia Baizhu Tianma Decoction. The TCM syndrome scores, carotid IMT, plaque area, and overall clinical response rates were compared between the two groups. Results: After treatment,
the TCM syndrome score in the observation group was lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Post-treatment, the carotid IMT and
plaque area in the observation group were significantly improved compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The overall clinical response rate
in the observation group was higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The use of Banxia Baizhu Tianma Decoction as an
adjunctive treatment for patients with CAS presenting with the syndrome of wind-phlegm obstructing the meridians yields significant therapeutic effects, improving clinical symptoms, reducing carotid plaque, and lowering IMT.
