A Case Study on the Adaptation Intervention for College Veterans Who Have Returned to School and Changed Their Major Based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Yan Zhang

Abstract

Veteran students who return to school after military service often encounter difficulties in adapting to college life, especially
when combined with the changes in their studies and social interactions brought about by changing majors. Such students are prone to
developing adaptation disorders. This study takes a veteran student who transferred to a different major as an example. Based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), it systematically analyzes the causes of problems in cognition, emotions, and avoidance, and implements a
three-stage progressive intervention plan of "cognitive restructuring—emotion regulation—behavior activation". After a one-year followup and assistance, the student's irrational academic cognition was reversed, sleep disorders were significantly improved, academic performance recovered, and he actively participated in professional competitions and career preparation. The case indicates that the CBT
framework is effective in addressing the adaptation issues of this group; universities should establish a long-term support mechanism with
early warning, multi-party collaboration, and a strengths-based perspective to promote the comprehensive adaptation and sustainable development of such students.
