Effects of DanceSport-Specific Speed Training on Single-Movement Time and Reaction Speed in Chinese Competitive Standard Dancers
Abstract
reaction speed in Chinese competitive Standard dancers. Methods: Thirty-two registered B- or C-level dancers (16 couples; 16 men and 16
women) entered an experimental group (8 couples) or control group (8 couples). The experimental group completed a periodized speed module during four weekly Standard-dance sessions, while controls continued regular training. Single-movement time and LED-based reaction
speed were tested before training, at midpoint, and after training. Mixed group × time analyses of variance, pre-to-post contrasts, Hedges' g,
95% confidence intervals (CIs), Holm adjustment, and couple-level sensitivity analyses were used. Results: Single-movement time decreased
from 0.339 ± 0.030 to 0.308 ± 0.018 s in the experimental group and from 0.340 ± 0.029 to 0.335 ± 0.030 s in controls. The individual-level
interaction was marginal (p =.053, partial η² =.117), but experimental dancers improved 0.0256 s more than controls (95% CI 0.0050–0.0461;
adjusted p =.018; g = 0.91), and the couple-level interaction was significant (p =.014). Reaction-speed scores decreased from 0.545 ± 0.045 to
0.474 ± 0.040 s experimentally and from 0.545 ± 0.046 to 0.535 ± 0.046 s in controls. The interaction was significant (p <.001, partial η² =.357),
with 0.0619 s greater improvement (95% CI 0.0353–0.0884; adjusted p <.001; g = 1.71). Conclusion: The speed module produced a large,
robust improvement in reaction speed and favourable, though model-sensitive, improvement in single-movement time.
