Military Training and Inspection of Local Militias in Shaanxi during the Northern Song Dynasty
Abstract
inward and neglecting the outward, the garrisoned troops stationed at the borders could not meet the dynastys defense needs. To resist invasions from the Liao and Western Xia, as well as control the southwestern ethnic minorities, the Song government recruited a large number of
local militias for border defense and combat. As the Northern Song government actively recruited these local militias, established specialized
management institutions, organized them into units, and conducted training and inspection, the management system for local militias gradually became institutionalized and formalized.
