Cultural Identity and Cultural Adaptability in China: A Case Study of International Students at a University in Hangzhou

Hangtong Zhu, Dong Yao

Abstract

Amid deepening China-Uzbekistan cooperation, more Central Asian students are studying in China. This study examines Uzbek
student Max's seven-year academic journey in Hangzhou through interviews and contextual analysis. It identifies a four-stage evolution of
cultural identity that positively influences psychological, social, and academic adaptation. Key factors such as language proficiency and social
interactions drive this transformation, while combined assimilation-integration strategies enhance adaptive outcomes.
