Rethinking Native-Speakers: Decentralizing the Native Speaker Ideology in English as an International Language Pedagogy

Abstract


This paper will argue that the concept of the native-speaker idealism is contradictory with the principles and aims of EIL and demonstrates the risks it poses to teacher and learner identity. In this way, the paper argues for a paradigm shift to a less unified, pluralistic pedagogy of EIL which is more consistent with the sociolinguistic reality of global use of English.
