The Relationship between Family Sports Atmosphere and Sports Participation of College Students

Jiayi Chen

Abstract

This study explores the impact of family sports atmosphere (FSA) on sports participation awareness (SPA) among Chinese university students, addressing a critical gap in existing research that primarily focuses on adolescents. Through a mixed-methods approach combining surveys (n=500) and structural equation modeling, we identified three key dimensions of FSAparental sports behavior, family sports
facilities, and shared sports activitiesas significant predictors of SPA. Results revealed that parental sports behavior (?=0.32, p<0.001) and
shared activities (?=0.28, p<0.01) had stronger effects than facilities (?=0.15, p<0.05). The study innovatively integrates multi-dimensional
FSA factors and highlights the mediating role of family communication quality. These findings emphasize the need for family-centered interventions to enhance youth sports engagement, offering policy implications for integrating familial and institutional efforts in promoting lifelong physical activity.
