The Application of Piano Arpeggio Techniques in Musical Compositions

Jiahao Xu

Abstract

As one of the core textural techniques in piano performance, arpeggiation involves the sequential decomposition of chord notes and
serves multiple functions including harmonic support, melodic embellishment, emotional expression, and structural construction, serving as a
vital bridge between technical execution and musical depth. Drawing on theoretical research and practical experience in piano performance,
this paper systematically analyzes the technical classifications (decomposed chord arpeggios, chromatic arpeggios, tonal transition arpeggios,
etc.) and musical characteristics of arpeggiation. Through case studies of classical, Romantic, and modern compositions, it examines the application logic and expressive effects of arpeggiation across four dimensions: harmonic support, melodic shaping, emotional conveyance, and
textural enrichment. The study also proposes targeted technical training methodologies, providing theoretical references and practical guidance for pianists to master arpeggiation techniques and enhance their interpretive capabilities.
