A Review of Studies on Agency in Foreign Language Teaching and Learning

Abstract


The social turn in applied linguistics since the mid-1990s has called for language learners and teachers to be viewed as active and
dynamic subjects who are able to access and provide developmental opportunities based on specific social contexts. Under this trend, the
individual agency in foreign language teaching has become a hot research topic in recent years. This paper reviews the existing literature on
the nature of agency, the theoretical perspectives of agency research, research contents, and methods, and puts forward the future direction of
agency research based on these facets, which is intended to provide a reference for the relevant research in China.
