The Predictive Value of Gastrocnemius Muscle Multi-parameter Ultrasound Index in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Sarcopenia

Shuliang Nan, Li Liu, Liang Mu*

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the predictive value of multi-parameter ultrasound indexes of gastrocnemius muscle in patients with
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease sarcopenia. Methods: Forty patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease sarcopenia who
were treated in this hospital from February 2023 to March 2024 were selected as the study objects and included in the study group. Fortytwo patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease without sarcopenia were selected as the control group. The subjects in both groups
underwent two-dimensional gray scale ultrasonography to measure the thickness of the medial head muscle of the right gastrocnemius muscle, feather Angle and muscle bundle length. By comparing and analyzing the difference of ultrasonic parameters between the two groups,
ROC curve was drawn to analyze the value of ultrasonic parameters of gastrocnemius muscle in predicting sarcopenia. Results: The muscle
thickness, feathery Angle and muscle bundle length of the study group were lower than those of the control group (P < 0.05). The accuracy of
multi-parameter ultrasound index of the medial head of gastrocnemius muscle in the diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease sarcopenia is at a high level. Conclusion: The change of multi-parameter ultrasound index of gastrocnemius muscle can objectively quantify the
degree of muscle mass loss, and thus show high accuracy in predicting sarcopenia of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
