The Effect of Epidural Analgesia on Oxytocin-induced Labor

Qian Liu, Kairu Mao, Tingting Hu, Xiaoling Zhu*

Abstract

Objective: To explore the effects of epidural analgesia (EA) on oxytocin-induced labor. Method: A total of 540 women who
gave birth at a hospital in Wenzhou between January and October 2019 were recruited. The control group received oxytocin for labor
induction and augmentation, while the observation group additionally received EA. Result: The EA group required significantly higher
doses and longer infusion times of oxytocin, and their labor duration was extended. Uterine contraction strength was lower, with longer
intervals and shorter contraction durations at various time points compared to the control group (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in postpartum hemorrhage, Apgar scores, or delivery outcomes between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion: EA can reduce
uterine contraction strength, increase oxytocin dosage and labor duration, without negatively affecting delivery outcomes. It also prolongs
each stage of labor.
