News Reporting from the Perspective of Critical Discourse AnalysisTaking The Economist as an Instance

Minping Le

Abstract

The Economist analyzed reports on the Ferguson and Hong Kong events, applying the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine these reports from two key aspects: vocabulary selection and conversion. Through this detailed analysis, the research revealed a double standard in how Western media presented these two events, with significant differences in language use and framing depending on the subject matter. The study emphasizes the power of CDA as an analytical tool, highlighting its ability to help readers uncover hidden agendas and critically engage with news content. In doing so, CDA fosters a more discerning approach to media consumption, encouraging individuals to re-evaluate the information they receive and make more accurate and informed judgments about the news. Ultimately, it empowers readers to become more critical and conscious consumers of media.
