Geographical Cultural Integration and Differentiation: A Study on the Evolutionary Differences of New Year Music between the Lan Na Hmong of Thailand and the Hmong of Guizhou and Hunan Provinces in China

Bi Zhitao, Khomkrich Karin

Abstract

This study focuses on the differences in the evolution of New Year music between the Lanna Hmong people of Thailand and the Qianxi-Xiang Hmong of China, and deeply explores the influence of geographical cultural integration and differentiation on music development. Through field investigations and literature research, this study analyzes the historical evolution, musical characteristics, and cultural connotations of the New Year music of these two ethnic groups. The research finds that although both groups originated from Hmong culture, under different geographical environments, influenced by local culture, religion, and society, their New Year music shows significant differences in musical style, performance form, and repertoire content. Revealing these evolution differences helps deepen the understanding of the diversity of Hmong culture and promotes cross-cultural music exchanges and protection.
