A Study of Negative Transfer in Academic Writing of Chinese English Learners

Jiahui Zou

Abstract

Under the influence of mother tongue, the negative transfer often appears at the lexical, syntactic and discourse levels. Most of the
current research focuses on the writing of middle and high school students, few are on academic English writing. This study, through corpusbased approach, aims to explore negative transfer of mother tongue in the academic writing process of Chinese English learners.
??Based on existing research results, this study contrasts the self-established Corpus of Suzhou University (CETS) with British Academic
English Writing Corpus (BAWE). Lacking of vocabulary, Chinese English learners are inferior to native learners in the use of cohesive devices and sentence richness. It is found that Chinese English learners have negative transfer of collocation in lexicon and subject-verb agreement in syntax. In terms of discourse, Chinese English learners have a slightly lower lexical richness with statistical insignificance. This study
provides suggestions for Chinese English learners to deal with negative transfer of mother tongue in academic writing.
