Discussion on Captive Monkeys

Qin Zheng

Abstract

As the demand for captive monkeys has increased, many problems have arisen. This study synthesizes the global situation of monkeys as pets, illegally traded, and abandoned, and finds that these behaviors pose serious risks to monkeys, human health, and the ecosystem.
The study compiled data and literature and found that thousands of monkeys are illegally traded each year, many young monkeys die in transit, and captive monkeys are commonly psychologically disturbed and have much shorter lifespans than their wild counterparts. In addition,
abandoned monkeys can damage local ecology and even spread disease. In my opinion, these problems can only be solved by strengthening
laws against the sale of monkeys, replacing animal experiments with new technologies, and educating the public not to keep monkeys. As
fellow earth creatures, human beings should work hard to create a peaceful natural world. Only by working together globally can we protect
these animals and maintain the ecological balance.
