Research on the Cultural Connotations and Artistic Characteristics of Miao Batik with Fish Patterns

Abstract

Miao batik is a national-level representative intangible cultural heritage project that embodies the historical memory, belief system,
and aesthetic sensibilities of the Miao people. The fish motif, as a core and frequently used pattern in batik, combines decorative value with
profound spiritual significance, reflecting ethnic migration history, ancestor worship, reproductive beliefs, and ecological concepts. Current
research primarily focuses on the batik technique and overall patterns, while insufficient attention has been paid to the intrinsic connection
between the cultural connotations and artistic expression of the fish motif. This study examines fish motifs from Guizhou's key production areas, integrating theories from ethnology and semiotics to trace their cultural origins, symbolic framework, and visual characteristics. The findings
demonstrate that this motif serves as a symbolic representation incorporating multiple cultural dimensions rather than a realistic depiction of natural objects, offering new perspectives for batik pattern research and providing theoretical support for the modern adaptation of traditional motifs.
