Challenging the Chains: Power Dynamics under the Influence of Gender Roles in Wuthering Heights

Jingjing Guo

Abstract

This paper argues that in the power structure constructed in Wuthering Heights, in addition to factors such as class, culture, and system, the influence of gender roles on the distribution of power and its dynamics is also particularly important. Whether it is the pursuit and defense of power within the gender framework by male characters such as Heathcliff, or the revolt and escape from the traditional power structure by female characters such as Catherine, all of them closely influence the distribution of the power structure in the wilderness and change
the direction of power flow. In addition, the bisexuality of Linton Heathcliff and Catherine Linton is also an important factor in breaking and
restoring the balance of power.
