GYO Program: The Path to Cultivating High - quality Teacher Candidates A Case Study of Tennessee

Yuanyuan Peng

Abstract

In the process of basic education development, teacher education is an important part. In recent years, the shortage of teacher
resources has become more and more serious, mainly manifested in the imbalance of gender ratio in the teaching staff and the lack of mi
nority teachers. In response to the shortage of teaching staff, the United States has taken measures in each state to alleviate this problem.
Among them, the Grow Your Own program is one of the effective methods. This program is for each state to conduct teacher training
for local community residents according to specific needs to relieve the shortage of teachers in school districts. Each state has innovative
measures for the GYO program. The teacher vocational apprenticeship system in Tennessee, as a new teacher candidate preparation plan,
has a good innovative effect.
