Construction of Traditional Chinese Medicine Image in Russian Mainstream Media Discourse: An Empirical Study Based on Appraisal Theory and Corpus Analysis

Jingfei Li, Lin He

Abstract

Grounded in appraisal theory, the study adopts a mixed method approach analyzing data collected from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)-related reports from TASS, Kommersant and RIA Novosti (2021-2024) in Russia as the research corpus. The study systematically examines the types and distribution of attitudinal resources in the corpus, identifies the core characteristics of TCM image constructed
by Russian media, and reveals the societal attitude reflected in the media discourse. Findings indicate that Russian mainstream media adopt a
predominantly positive attitude toward TCM. The constructed TCM image is characterized by three core attributes: a clinically reliable complementary therapeutic approach, a key practical carrier of China-Russia Silk Road of Health Cooperation, and a traditional medical system
with great development potential and practical bottlenecks.
