The Effect of Chromium on the Carburization of Six Fe-19Ni-13/21Cr Alloys with Various Al Additions at 900oC in Oxygen-contaminated CH4-H2-H2S Atmospheres

Abstract


The effect of chromium on the carburization of six Fe–19Ni–13/21Cr–xAl (x = 0, 2, 6 at.%) alloys was studied at 900 oC in four
CH4–H2–H2S gases providing sulphur pressures from 0 to 4.8 × 10−11atm. Alloys with 21 at.% Cr exhibit more severe internal carburization
than alloys with 13 at.% Cr. The carburization of Fe-19Ni-13Cr-6Al was blocked in the two H2S-richer gas mixtures by the growth of external
alumina scales. While internal carburization cannot be completely suppressed in Fe-19Ni-21Cr-6Al exposed to the same two gas mixtures.
