Using the Available Evidence, Analyse the Holistic Care of Older People in the Context of Illness

Abstract

Against the background of accelerating global population ageing, dementia has become a prominent publicâ€‘health challenge, and dementia care is confronted with multiple difficulties including regional resource disparities and complex care models. Based on existing empirical evidence, this paper explores care practices for older adults with dementia from a holisticâ€‘care perspective. It first reviews commonlyâ€‘used
assessment tools such as the Bristol Activities of Daily Living Scale and the Geriatric Depression Scale, analysing their practical values and
inherent limitations in physical, cognitive, psychological and social assessment. It then compares the clinical outcomes of pharmacological
and non-pharmacological interventions. It points out that medicines such as donepezil can only relieve symptoms rather than halt disease
progression, while non-pharmacological approaches including music therapy and reminiscence therapy show unique strengths in alleviating
patients' emotional and behavioural symptoms. This paper also highlights the central roles of family carers, multidisciplinary teamwork and
person-centred care, and addresses practical concerns such as carer burnout and patient nutritional management. The study concludes that dementia care requires individualised programmes integrating physical, psychological and social dimensions. Future advances in dementia-care
services can be achieved through technological innovation, policy improvement and international experience-sharing to ease care-related pressures brought by population ageing.
