TCM Non-pharmacological Therapies Combined with Lifestyle Intervention in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Abstract

PCOS is one of the more common endocrine problems seen in women of reproductive age. It is now clear that simply prescribing
medication is not enoughâ€”patients often need support from multiple angles. Changing diet and exercise habits remains the basic approach,
but many patients find it hard to keep these changes going over months or years. Recently, a number of non-drug therapies from TCM have
been added to lifestyle programs as complementary options. These include acupuncture, electroacupuncture, moxibustion, and catgut embedding at acupoints. For this review, we collected and analyzed data from RCTs that met our selection criteria. The papers were drawn from
three databases: PubMed, CNKI, and Wanfang. Our aim was to see whether combining TCM therapies with lifestyle advice actually works,
and whether it is safe. From the studies we reviewed, a fairly consistent picture emerged: combining TCM non-drug therapies with
lifestyle support gave better results than lifestyle advice given on its own. Patients in the combined groups had better ovulation recovery,
improved insulin sensitivity, and more stable hormone profiles. The benefit was particularly clear among those who were overweight or had
obesity. Several physiological pathways may account for these effects. One is modulation of the hypothalamicâ€“pituitaryâ€“ovarian axis;
another is suppression of chronic low-grade inflammation; a third is enhanced peripheral glucose utilization. In terms of safety, the adverse
events we came across were mostly mild and self-limitingâ€”local bruising, transient dizziness, or slight discomfort at needling sites. A
note of caution is in order, though. Treatment protocols differed across studies, and the patient populations were almost entirely from East Asia. So while the overall direction of benefit seems clear, we need to be measured in how we apply these findings to other clinical settings. That
said, from a clinical standpoint, these non-drug TCM approaches do offer something useful for PCOS management, and we would encourage
more work in this area.
