Factors Influencing Compliance and Strategies for Enhancing Adherence to Care Bundles for Preventing Surgical Site Infections

Abstract


Surgical site infections (SSIs) remain a significant challenge in global healthcare systems, contributing to increased patient morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. This comprehensive review examines the multifaceted factors influencing compliance with SSI prevention
bundles and explores evidence-based strategies to enhance adherence. Through analysis of recent studies, we identify key determinants of
compliance at organizational, healthcare professional, and patient levels, and evaluate interventions ranging from audit and feedback systems
to multidisciplinary team approaches. Our findings indicate that successful implementation requires a coordinated strategy addressing contextual barriers, with special consideration for resource-limited settings. The review concludes that sustainable improvement in bundle adherence
depends on integrating multifaceted approaches tailored to specific clinical environments and surgical disciplines, with implications for both
clinical practice and future research directions.
