Gastrocolic Fistula After Gastrectomy: A Case Report
Abstract
Gastrocolic fistula refers to an abnormal pathological communication between the gastric remnant and colon after gastrectomy,
which is a rare long-term postoperative complication characterized by intractable diarrhea, progressive weight loss and malnutrition. The diagnosis and standardized treatment of this disease remain clinically challenging due to its low incidence and non-specific manifestations. We
herein report a 66-year-old male patient who developed gastrocolic fistula 2 years after repeated reconstructive gastrointestinal surgeries. The
patient presented with persistent watery diarrhea refractory to routine medical therapy. Upper gastrointestinal contrast confirmed the fistulous
tract, and radical surgical resection of the fistula together with affected intestinal segments was performed. The patient achieved uneventful
postoperative recovery and was discharged without residual gastrointestinal symptoms. This case report summarizes the clinical features, diagnostic modalities and therapeutic strategies of postoperative gastrocolic fistula, aiming to improve clinicians' awareness of this rare complication and reduce missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis.
