Liu Fengbao's Theory of the Sage in Nanhua Xuexin Bian
Abstract
paper examines Liu's theory of the sage, focusing on his Confucian-inspired attempts to reconcile Confucianism and Zhuangzi and their
inherent tensions. Liu both equates and hierarchizes the Perfect Man, Divine Man and Sage, introduces a gradual cultivation framework, and
reinterprets "wuwei" as a governance principle. While softening Zhuangzi's critique of Confucian norms, his work breaks the rigid ConfucianTaoist opposition, endowing the sage with both transcendence and practicality.
