Practical Challenges and Pathways for the Living Transmission of Xibo Embroidery â€” An Investigation Based on Collaborative Practice between Inheritors and University Teams

Abstract

The living transmission of Xibo embroidery confronts three interconnected challenges: excessive workload on inheritors, fragmentation of cultural resources, and inadequate market agency and rights protection. Drawing on the collaborative practices among Yang
Xiuyu Embroidery Workshop, Namei Embroidery Cooperative, and a university team, this study proposes a "inheritor+" collaborative
transmission model. This model redistributes unskilled tasks by means of the professional division of labor among inheritors, cooperatives,
and university teams; promotes the recording and transformation of embroidery patterns by way of joint archiving and joint design; and
sustains the inheritance momentum through cultural dissemination, market participation, and benefit feedback. The study maintains that
while guaranteeing inheritors' cultural interpretation rights, craftsmanship approval rights, and fair economic return rights, establishing an
external collaboration mechanism led by inheritors can effectively support the dynamic inheritance of the Xibo embroidery. The university
team of this research represents a kind of cooperative form under the "Inheritor +" model, which brings about some insights for other external cooperative ways.
