A Study on the Artistic Characteristics of Chan Buddhist Painting and Calligraphy in Southwest China from a Regional Cultural Perspective

Abstract

The Southwest is not only the place of peculiar mountain topography but also densely distributed ethnic cultures. For a thousand
years, Chan Buddhist culture had been rooted among the people and gave birth to a style of Chan Buddhist painting and calligraphy, neither
like the Central Plains nor Jiangnan region. Different from the ethereal and remote beauty standard of the mainstream Chan art, Southwest
Chan painting and calligraphy incorporates the landscape aesthetics of Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan and Guizhou, local folk custom and Chan
philosophy of sudden enlightenment, and it is marked as artistic qualities of vigorous and incisive, rustic and wild, and the intangible and tangible being harmoniously integrated. By regional culture, the present paper studies the formation and development of the Chan painting and
calligraphy in Southwest China. It makes the analysis on their painting artistic features in three aspectsâ€”brushwork and ink expression, image creation, spirit connotation, and then probes how the natural environment, cultural custom, and the development of Chan Buddhism have
influenced their artistic style, so as to provide reference for exploring, researching and innovation development for the traditional painting and
calligraphy in Southwest China.
