Barbie in Queer Perspective: An Analysis of Gender Identity

Zhao Fan

Abstract

Queer theory, as an important theory in gender studies, has also attracted widespread attention and critical practice from domestic
scholars since the 1990s. Queer thought reflects in every corner of humanities and social sciences, and can also be seen in film and television. Barbie, which won the global box office champion in 2023, not only has a strong queer attribute in its worldview creation, but also
has a queer imprint on its audience level. With the help of queer theory, this article first analyzes the reasons why Barbie can be regarded
as a queer film, and then starts from the audience level of Barbie to analyze and interpret the expression of queer thought and philosophical
metaphor in it, in order to start a new discussion on gender issues.
