Controversy Over Media Coverage of Teens Death: Lessons for Journalism

Abstract

How can professional media better care for vulnerable groups while upholding the journalistic principles of objectivity and impartiality in the social media era? This case study examines the controversy surrounding a video reported by Beijing News, accused of triggering
cyberbullying that led to the death of Liu Xuezhou. The analysis includes differing opinions on the medias role in Lius death and highlights
the challenges journalists face in maintaining balance, accuracy, and privacy in their reporting. The paper calls for greater anticipatory care
and adherence to ethical standards to minimize harm and ensure compassionate, empathetic reporting.
