The Stylistic Evolution of Two-Piano Works from the Classical to Romantic Periods

Yu Song

Abstract

This study explores the stylistic evolution of two-piano works from the Classical to the Romantic period, focusing on the significant
differences in structure, emotional expression, use of tone colors, and technical demands. Two-piano works of the Classical period emphasize
harmony and balance, characterized by strict formal structures such as sonata, rondo, and theme-and-variations, reflecting logic and symmetry.
In contrast, the Romantic period prioritizes emotional expression and individual freedom, adopting freer forms that showcase rich emotional
layers and varied tonal colors. The research highlights the critical role of social and historical changes and advancements in piano technology
in the evolution of two-piano works. This evolution provides valuable insights for modern music education and composition practice.
