A Study on Translation of Review of Realities of Irish Life from the Perspective of Narratology

Abstract

This paper focuses on a book review, Realities of Irish Life (1869), published in the Edinburgh Review (1802-1929). The review
presents a realistic portrayal of Ireland in the mid-19th century for its readers. From the perspective of narratology, it examines various elements of the source text, such as character dialogues and scene descriptions, as case studies. The analysis focuses on narrative point of view,
narrative time, and narrative speech. Through the analysis of representative cases, it explores translation methods to maintain the authenticity
and objectivity of the original text while effectively conveying the author’s intentions in the target text.
　　From the perspective of narratology, in order to reproduce the author’s writing purpose, the target text needs to be flexibly adjusted to ensure the reproduction of the characteristics of the original text. The original text has variable narrative points of view, and addition or diction
are employed in the target language according to the aesthetic effects of different narrative perspectives. The original text presents a characteristic depiction of scenes in terms of narrative time, so omission is adopted to reproduce the narrative features of the original text. Retention or
conversion is used to present the narrative speech of the original text as accurately as possible.
